The Origins of American Politics

1) Describe the debate over the nature of government. Compare the viewpoints of
Jefferson vs Hamilton.

Jefferson wanted the government to use its power only when it was absolutely necessary. He trusted the people and wanted them to make their own decisions. He believed "It is better to risk too much liberty, than to suffer from too much government"(93)

Hamilton had a very different view. He thouhgt that the government should direct the American economy. He even created taxes just like the British used to do. He didn't have faith in the people which is why he didn't think they should make their own decisions.
2) What is a political party?

A political party is a group of people who want to win an election in order to control government policies and programs.
3) Describe John Adams presidency. What were some of the difficulties he faced?

He was president in a time where political party differences were growing. Plus he also faces the threat of war with france. However he took care of it by sending American negotiaters to France. Yet, when the french tried to bribe them , France and The U.S started to fight an undeclared war.
4) Outline the key events of Jeffersonʼs presidency.

Jefferson reduced the power of the government by cutting the size of federal bureaucracy and the army. He also cut down some of the taxes. He also had to face some controversy the Marbury vs Madison case. Before leaving office Adams appointed william Marbury as justice of the peace in culombia. But Jefferson told Madison (the secretary) not to deliver the official papers. This resulted in Marbury sueing Madison. The supreme court was against the Judiciary Act and said it was unconstitutional for the president to have the power to appoint someone justice of peace. This showed the power of the supreme court because they were able to do jusical reviews. During his term Jefferson also purchased territory from the French. He also supported the Lewis and Clark expedition. At the end of his term Jefferson passed the Embargo Act which restricted trade. The Act did not hurt its intended target but American traders. So, Jefferzson lost his popularity and was not reelected.
